MODERNISTIC RENAISSANCE

ARTIST STATEMENT

This project tries to recreate Renaissance with a modern approach in black voice with a black perspective in a way that portrays the narrative differently. I tried to bring elements of my African heritage in a black American fashion with Renaissance to represent a unique narrative that shows the pride of African heritage around the world. There are so many elements, symbols, signs, and details that recognizable to everyone.

My exploration and curiosity have opened my mind to how to get what I want to capture on a camera. I feel like these pieces show how I see certain things artistically and how I interpret them. I want people to see my photo in a new dimension or different approach modernistically because we are used to a certain way of seeing photos. My work is both conceptual, social, cultural, and politically driven in a way that addresses current issues. What I create is a bit historical, and traditional but more modernistic and portraiture is my favorite subject to work on. Among the artist that has inspired me photographically are David Lachapelle, Annie Leibovitz, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Ayogu Kingsley, Kehinde Willey, Titus Kaphar, and Jono Dry  among others

My approach to photography has expanded and this has substantially diverse my scope artistically. To me, art is a powerful tool that could spark something in one’s lifetime which could change the course of history.
